“Discover how I went from struggling single parent on the benefit system, to a life of freedom, fun and flexibility running 2 successful businesses online”.
Yes I wasn’t always able to make money online. I wasn’t born with any technical skills at all in fact. Nor did I gain any as I was growing up.
Having left school and decided college wasn’t for me, I made money creating bespoke knitted jumpers and working any odd jobs that came my way. But I knew nothing about starting a business, so after a couple of years I stopped and considered myself a ‘failure’.
Loving the creativity I enrolled in an alternative Art College, Tobias School of Art and trained to be a Waldorf Art Teacher. It was there I met my husband to be and went on to have my two gorgeous daughters.
Life doesn’t always go as planned of course…
After a few years I found myself a lone parent, penniless, having to exist on the UK ‘benefit’ system, in a miserable flat with damp dripping from the walls…with my two very small children.
This is where I learnt about money. Not how to make it, but how to make a little go a long way. These were some of the lowest points of my life, as anyone who has brought up children on their own knows. I had virtually no support and had to figure things out on my own.
Eventually I got a teaching job at the Brighton Steiner School and for 7 years I taught 7 – 14 year-olds how to paint, draw, and be creative. I had succumbed to what society (and my parents) had planned for me. I was in ‘the system’.
When I just knew I had to get out…
So I handed in my notice, and with a 3-month plan I left teaching to become a full-time Professional Artist. This time I knew I had to get business help though. Over the next years I consumed all things business; I learnt about business planning, business marketing (of course there was no Social Media or online marketing in those days), PR, and Sales and Selling.
I had a moderately successful career as a fine Artist, having started the Newhaven Artists Trail, a community group Newhaven Arts, as well as organising various exhibitions, projects and open houses. We were always in the paper and enjoyed living the artists’ life. I also exhibited nationally and had an agent sell my work in London. Life was looking up.
But I knew there just had to be more…
In 2008 my life changed forever. Having attended a large personal development event in London, I set about working on my ‘Success Mind-set’ and set some whopping great Goals. Still not making much money (I was lucky to break even), I gathered the courage to ask ‘How could I join the £12,000 training courses’ that were part of the ‘Breakthrough To Success’ sales offer. I just knew I had to make massive change for me and my girls.
I discovered something enormous – by asking high quality questions, the answers come. I paid bit by bit, worked for ‘crew pounds’, and over the next 2 years completed the courses and turned my life around. Where there is a will there is a way.
Now I knew I had to dedicate my life to helping others…
Now I know this sounds a bit clichéd, but having got my Coaching, NLP, Hypnosis, and various other trainings, I was passionate about helping people to start their own business doing what they love, gain some freedom and make good money.
In 2013 I took a gigantic leap of faith and left my successful physical coaching practice (in a lovely large office near where I lived), sold my house and car, put our ‘stuff’ into storage. And inspired by my youngest daughter, went to see how I could put my business online whilst travelling and living in Australia.
How I nearly lost it all…
I have a strong belief that life is for living, and that you should live, love and enjoy every second. But I took an enormous risk, as making money online is a different model to the one I knew. And I had to learn fast. What I hadn’t counted on was how important having a strong internet connection was.
Australia is challenged in that area, (see my Blog: My First Year Living & Working In Australia) and I had some of my biggest ‘learning opportunities’ over that year. As my financial pot went down and down, so my motivation to succeed at this new game got more and more. To say I saw the bottom again, was an understatement.
Again I applied myself to learning, consuming every course I could find, getting great mentors and working hard to re-build my online business. I’ve chosen the Blogging Model, as this means I get to live anywhere I want (so long as there is good internet), and work from gorgeous cafes all over the world. So life is really good!
2016 and beyond…
Designing your own life and business of course gave me the opportunity to not only help my coaching clients build their businesses; it also has given me the chance to set up a whole new project based on my passion for art.
So The Artist Blogger was born early in 2016, a niched blog helping Artists with their online marketing and Social Media, as well as turning my attention back to my own painting.
I’m painting again – so life is truly blessed with variety as I get to be an Artist, Blogger & Coach. Bliss.
